Me & My Lunchbox

Posted On Sunday March 11, 2007 By Matt

My mom always took my picture on the first day of school in my new outfit with my new lunchbox. I have several of these from throughout my childhood. This photo is from 1st grade. it is particularly bad because, well, look at me. My mom must have given me that bowl haircut the day before and my socks don’t even match. My mom picked out all my clothes for me until pretty late in life. I finally threw a fit and refused to wear what she bought for me. I guess this outfit was pretty typical of the time and would probably be retro and cool now but I could never bring myself to go back to this look. Living through it once was bad enough. The lunchbox is for the animated film “The Secret of Nimh” of which I was a huge fan, still am. Other lunchboxes I remember were “Peanuts”, “The Dukes of Hazzard”, “The Empire Strikes Back”, “G.I. Joe”, and “M.A.S.K.” (The animated series, not the film with Cher). I must have been a huge pain in the ass because I remember my dislike for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches when the jelly was at all warm. My jelly had to be like it had just come out of the refrigerator or I wouldn’t go near it. But the jelly was inevitably warm by lunchtime having sat in my lunchbox for several hours.

What Cool People Are Saying

ROFL @ the socks! I don’t think I would have noticed that what with all the other . . . interesting things to look at. :)

We weren’t allowed to wear shorts to school!
